Doing Good Deeds
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Why a lack of good deeds leads to a failure of Muslims and the Muslim world on many levels, including a failure to even understand what God the Praised and Most High is telling us in the Qur'an.
The Enemies of Islam according to the Qur'an
by Reaz Islam
A major misconception amongst some Muslims and some non Muslims is that Islam is at war with all other religions and ways of life. I wish to challenge this misconception by studying and identifying the characteristics of the enemies of Islam as described in the Quran.
Free and Equal under the Qur'an
by Havva G. Guney-Ruebenacker
Only with non-apologetic, rational and principled reformist Islamic thought is it possible to deduce egalitarian and realistic Qur'anic interpretations.
(Comment: This piece was written originally as an op-ed piece to be published at the Wall Street Journal, in response to a piece by Ayaan Hirsi Ali entitled "Unfree Under Islam" on Tuesday, August 16, 2005. How problematic this view is, becomes manifest in two areas: Slavery and treatment of women. This article is about an ugly topic where those two areas overlap: Concubinage or in more modern terms: Sex slavery.
What is Progressive Islam?
by Omid Safi
The various understandings of Islam which fall under the rubric of `progressive' are both continuations of, and radical departures from, the hundred and fifty year old tradition of liberal Islam. Liberal advocates of Islam generally display an uncritical, almost devotional identification with modernity [...] Progressive Muslims espouse a critical and non-apologetic `multiple critique' with respect to both Islam and modernity. They are undoubtedly postmodern in the sense of their critical approach to modernity. That double engagement with the varieties of Islam and modernity, plus an emphasis on concrete social action and transformation, is the defining characteristic of progressive Islam today.
Progressive Chess
by Oliver A Ruebenacker
Welcome ot the town of Chessvile, where everything is about chess. During their Golden Age, the people from Chessvile would beat everybody in the game of chess. Today, most Chessvillians do not even know the rules of the game, although they still love chess more than anything else. This is how it happened, and which role various movements played, such as traditionalism, liberalism, libero-traditionalism and progressivism.
